i am still in and was assigned to collect the contribution after the meeting.
i checked the boxes with another brother and there was nothing inside.
no contributions were made that day.
Back in the day when I was the Accounts guy, out of a congregation of around 100 publishers I'd say around three-quarters of all regular donations came from 1 elder and 2 aspiring single MS's.
So it wasn't unusual for 'the takings' to be very low after some meetings.
flying blind on the incoming calls but i am not fearfully looking around and will approach any religious zealots like a warrior.
there nothing like the unpredictable, because these men it's all about the prediction..
When I started my fade I set the ring tone for any incoming elder's or KH calls to be 'Jingle Bells'.
Suffice to say I need not have bothered. No bells were jingled but 'oh what fun it is to fade ...'
was talking to a good buddy of mine a couple days ago (we pioneered and were in bethel together and have both left the cult a few years ago), about the current cart and d. and the consensus was that it is now a complete joke.
was watching a couple witnesses last week sit at a table with their literature display.
no approaching people for conversation, no initiating stimulating dialogue with passerbys, as was encouraged when i "pioneered" back in the day.
In our area I recently saw them promoting literature printed in Chinese (Mandarin). There was nothing displayed on the cart printed in English.
I checked the most recent census data - in this area a grand total of 0.1% of the population speak Mandarin as their first language.
We get some Chinese tourists but they are generally herded on and off buses together in groups.
So they are effectively excluding 99.9% of the population from their cart message.
I mean - seriously - why wouldn't they display primarily in English (the first language of more than 95% of locals) and supplement with some other languages?
i think for me in the last year the death of david bowie got to me the most.
not only in the way he handled his demise so classy by even making a song about it and a you tube about dying and sharing it with fans, but just his whole persona i always thought was pretty cool.
plus i enjoyed a good many of his songs.
A couple that haven't been mentioned:
Nick Drake - he released 3 albums in late 60's - early 70's that failed to achieve commercial success. Died aged 26 with there being no footage of him performing. The albums are now considered classics.
Ian Curtis - died aged 23 on eve of Joy Division's first American tour.
i found this amazing song!
and since a big number of the people on this board are unbelievers i thought you might enjoy it ;).
imo it is pure gold!.
Hi
This is just a refresh. But please have a listen, with the lyrics below.
I'm not trying to take credit from the original poster but I think this needs to be heard.
Hello Darwin my old friend
I’ve come to read from you again
You comfort me when I grow weary
Of people saying “it’s just a theory”
Because a theory is a system of abstractions in our finite minds
of laws behind the things we find with science
And on the internet I saw
A billion people, maybe more
People clinging to old delusions
People jumping to conclusions
People holding superstitions that are obviously quite absurd
Who never heard a single word of science
I really think they ought to know
How a disease like cancer grows
How did we learn how we might treat it
I really think one day we might beat it
'Cause it won't be by taking sugar pills or standing on one leg for hours
While eating flowers
But through the powers of science
If you have answers and you're sure
They're better than what came before
Make your hypothesis and test it
Take your results that you've collected
And then you write them in a paper and submit it for peer review
That's what we do
To check what's true in science
And the people stood and prayed
They said our faith cannot be swayed
They have their views and they won't move them
They have their truths and they won't prove them
They will take the words of their prophets over fossils that were really found
Beneath the ground
They don't like the sound of science

morning warship - he was the only restraint and i'm not saying that lightly.
i know there are a dozen others here who were in bethel back in the early 2000's who know what i'm talking about.
he actually kept me thinking this was jehovah's org because of his sincerity as if the holy spirit was operating in him.
Tape recordings of Sydlik's talks were re-copied and spread throughout the world.
I can remember in the late 80's / early 90's a recording where he talked excitedly about the 'bible code' found in the Torah. This was a method by which specific letters from the text can be selected to reveal an otherwise obscured message. He gave as an example a code for the names of trees found in Eden.
He then speculated that as the code was further deciphered, it could reveal a message that JW's are the true religion. Of course when a GB member - particularly one with the delivery of Sydlik - speculates, the sheep get carried along.
Can also remember him talking about rap music in relation to young people being reluctant to engage in preaching. Used an example of 5 year-olds being able to rap out songs. So ... if a 5 year-old can rap out songs, they should be able to rap-out a magazine presentation.
i was just thinking that the org has said lots of outrageous things over it's history and most jws just continue onward without a second thought.
so my question is what do you think would have to be said from the platform or wt to get people to get up and walk out immediately?
is it even possible?
"To All Congregations Worldwide
In anticipation of the imminent return of the earth to its original paradise condition, from 1 January 2016 the holy spirit has directed the Governing Body to most strongly encourage all true christians to adopt a meat-free, vegetarian diet. This loving provision will show our eager anticipation of the promised New World and our willingness to prepare even now for life under theocratic rule.
In a loving measure extended by the Governing Body, existing meat stocks may be consumed prior to 1 January 2016. However, we encourage prayerful consideration be given to the acquisition of any further meat products.
Additional direction will soon be provided, including the loving counsel that may be applied to those who unrepentantly fail to adjust to this new arrangement. Read: Leviticus 24:16.
In the meantime, how happifying it is to be part of a worldwide brotherhood so eager to embrace the life we will soon enjoy under worldwide paradise."

Hello
Apologies if this has been posted previously, but this news item has appeared today regarding the proposed redress for abuse victims following the Australian Royal Commission:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-10-27/labor-pledges-payments-for-sex-abuse-survivors/6886864
What's interesting is that in January it was proposed that the Federal Government contribute almost half of an estimated $4.3 billion redress scheme.
Under this proposal the government contributes only a fraction, with 'groups like churches and not-for-profit groups pay(ing) the bulk of compensation'.
Bear in mind that this is a proposal by the Opposition; the Government is still to respond to the Commission's recommendations.

Article: Reliable Advice for Raising Children
On Discipline:
Dr. James Dobson wrote in The Strong-Willed Child (1978): “Corporal punishment in the hands of a loving parent is a teaching tool by which harmful behavior is inhibited.” On the other hand, in an article adapted from the seventh edition of the popular book Baby and Child Care (1998), Dr. Benjamin Spock said: “Spanking teaches children that the larger, stronger person has the power to get his way, whether or not he is in the right.”
With regard to discipline, the Bible states: “The rod and reproof are what give wisdom.” (Proverbs 29:15) However, not all children need physical punishment. Proverbs 17:10 tells us: “A rebuke works deeper in one having understanding than striking a stupid one a hundred times.”
Could this be provided to the commission during the break. It's a relatively recent references and opens up all sorts of questions regarding physical punishment.
